Interfaces | DECT vs. Cellular

SmartButler® includes a cellular messaging feature whereby the system is able to send out text messages using Short Message Service (SMS) or Smart Message over Internet (SMI) messaging to runners. These messages are sent out immediately when a new call ticket is opened, and include all relevant details relating to the call ticket including the amount of time that the runner has to deliver the service. Currently, interfaces exist to DECT and Cellular messaging systems.
Advantages and disadvantages relating to each system are set out below. JAYBEE’s preference is cellular messaging for the reasons set out below.

DECT Messaging:

Advantages:

  • Fixed upfront cost. No ongoing costs per message sent.

Disadvantages:

  • Implementation process is lengthy.
  • Upfront hardware and software license cost can be substantial.
  • Allows only for one-way messaging only. Runners cannot send messages back to SmartButler® to update the status of call tickets.
  • Limitations on length of text messages.
  • No option of retry if message fails to reach handset.
  • When DECT handset is fast-moving (e.g. in an elevator), the message may not be delivered.
  • Most DECT servers require a 3 second delay between the sending of each message.
  • Error message of non-delivery may take a minute or longer. This delays the follow-up and delivery of the message via a different route.

Cellular Messaging:

Advantages:

  • Minimal upfront set-up cost.
  • Set-up time is very short and easily achieved.
  • Depending on competition in each individual country, it is frequently possible to negotiate attractive pricing with your local cellular operator including free handsets, attractively-priced package of SMS messages and a VPN pricing plan to include voice calls as well.
  • Two-way messaging available. This allows for outgoing messages from SmartButler® as well as incoming messages to update status of call tickets.
  • Most substantial element of cost is the variable cost of sending messages. This can be regulated by sending less messages if required.

Disadvantages:

  • Each message sent and received attracts a charge. This is paid to local cellular provider company.
  • May necessitate the runners carrying more than one handset if DECT phones are also in use.
